System Description
STEP PoE+ System
Edition 1
Introduction
This manual describes the basic steps for installing a PoE (Power over Ethernet) based system from Steplock. The manual applies generally to all devices that are connected and powered via the network, such as intercoms, access readers, and information displays.
Vad är PoE (Power over Ethernet)?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables both data and power to be transmitted through a single network cable (usually Cat5e, Cat6, or higher). The technology is used to simplify installations where separate cables for power and communication would otherwise be required.
Steplock uses PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), which provides higher power than standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) and is designed to power more power-hungry devices in the building's infrastructure.
Advantages of PoE Installation:
- Simpler and faster installation
Fewer cables and less wiring
Centralized power supply via a switch or injector
Communication and power over the same cable
Important Considerations for PoE Installation:
För att säkerställa stabil drift och optimal funktion i ett PoE-baserat system bör följande beaktas:
Wiring:
Use high-quality network cables, Cat6 or better, to minimize signal loss and ensure adequate power delivery. Avoid damage, splices, or shielding breaks in the cabling.
Cable Length:
The maximum recommended cable length for PoE is 100 meters between the switch/injector and the endpoint device. For longer distances, an intermediate network point, repeater, or fiber conversion is required.
PoE Source:
Ensure that the PoE+ switch or injector used can handle the total load from all connected devices.
UPS och backup:
To ensure operational reliability even during power outages, PoE switches with battery backup, such as the ST2052, should be used.
Steplock PoE+ Switches – Capacity Overview
| Modell | PoE-Ports | Total Power Budget (W) | Backup | Uplink-Ports | Max. Devices | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ST2079 | 8 ports | 300 W | No | 2 ports | 8 devices | Intercoms, access readers, and displays in smaller to medium-sized systems |
| ST2081 | 4 ports | 120 W | No | 2 ports | 4 devices | Smaller installations, e.g., a door environment with multiple devices |
| ST2051 | 4 ports | 180 W | Yes | 2 ports | 4 devices | Security-critical systems with backup requirements, e.g., entrances and elevators |
| ST2052 | 8 ports | 350 W | Yes | 2 ports | 8 devices | Larger installations with higher reliability requirements and central UPS functionality |
Note: The ST2051 and ST2052 are equipped with battery backup and are suitable for environments where operational reliability is critical, such as during power outages in buildings with access control systems.
Recommendations for PoE+ (802.3at) Installation:
Plan for 25–30 W per device. For example, an intercom can draw up to 30 W at full load (camera, display, unlocked electric lock).
For best results, distribute the load evenly and always check the total power budget of the switch, especially if you're using a PoE+ switch from a brand other than Steplock, not just the maximum limit per port.
Use Cat6 or better cable for reliable power and data distribution.
